Earlier this year we exclusively confirmed that IKEA Trådfri lights will one day with work with Philips Hue.
This is due to them both using the ZigBee protocol.

Like all smart home users we really wanted to see this happen.  The more tech that works together the better.

(Read Ikea Trådfri and Philips Hue)

We are very pleased to see IKEA were true to their word and a new firmware has just been released. UK users can access it now.

This firmware fixes the interoperability issue. This means once updated you can see and control the lights within the Philips Hue app!

This was confirmed with a small comment in the release notes:

“ZigBee interoperability with 3rd party devices improved”

To add your IKEA bulbs to your Hue family you need to make sure the bulbs are running the latest firmware. To update them you need the TRÅDFRI Gateway .

Eventually the bulbs will come off the shelf with the latest firmware, however this will probably take a while as existing stock will need to sell first.

One day in the future it would be amazing if retailers updated firmware of tech they sold to prevent this issue. However we can not see it happening any time soon. On the positive side IKEA sell in vast volumes so hopefully it will not take long for the new stock to arrive.

IKEA exclusively commented to us:

“We’re thrilled in the interest in TRÅDFRI, our new smart lighting and we’re excited to share that the range is now compatible with Philips Hue and will be compatible with Apple, Amazon and Google in the autumn.

Small changes in lighting can have a great impact on people’s well-being. Many people want to change their light and the atmosphere depending on the activity and we see that life at home can be improved by integrating technology into our home furnishings. With our Home Smart range, we want to make this easy, affordable, and therefore accessible to many people.

In the years to come, there will be additional launches, enabling people to build onto their Home Smart solution.”

Do the Ikea dimmers and buttons work with Hue too?

Cedric
Cedric

Any update on this?
It would be great to control Hue lights with the nice Tradfri dimmers!

David Wouters

Kevin Hughes. no sadly as soon as the trådfri bulbs have been paired with the Hue Bridge they lose their pairing to both the trådfri gateway and trådfri dimmers, however, once paired with hue, you are free to use philips’ hue dimmers and buttons. Supposedly id’ll be possible to pair trådfri dimmers and buttons to hue at a later time. And supposedly it’ll be possible (at a later date too) to start out with the trådfri gateway and bulbs, and add onto Hue bulbs and accessoires to that hub. (but that will be some time in the future yet.)

Will the ikea remote ever work with hue lights and the hue bridge?

David Wouters
Reply to  CJ

I hope so, but it’s up to philips to allow their bulbs to be paired to two controllers at once, though you can already pair ikea’s remote to a philips hue light by holding it close to it and holding the pair button for a few seconds, but in my own experience as soon as you do that the hue bulb will lose it’s connection to the bridge. The difference between the hue bridge and the tradfri gateway is, that IKEA chose to have it’s bulbs paired through the remote or dimmer, thereby making a connection to both dimmer and… Read more »

I bought the dimmer today for £8 As you say it discinnects from the hub when I pair it, and there doesn’t seem to be a way ro pair it with the bridge.

Can you explain what you mean abut pairing the dimmer using a Philips remote?

Assuming the tradfri bulbs are paired to the Hue hub, Is it possible to pair the Trafri remote, dimmer and motion sensor with the Hue hub? Or directly to bulbs without the bulbs dropping off the Hue bridge?

I’m confused, that article seems to suggest it isn’t possible to pair the dimmer to the bridge but here you say it is if you ‘use a Philips remote’:
“We spent a lot of time trying to pair the remote to the Philips Hue hub but didn’t find a solution despite getting them to communicate!”

RE: “the trådfri bulbs have been paired with the Hue Bridge”. Do you need to buy the Ikea bridge at all? Can I just buy the bulbs and connect then to my HUE bridge without ever connecting them to the Ikea bridge?
Thanks

Has anyone got it working? My bulbs are running firmware 1.2.217, but the hue app does’nt find them!?

Same problem here. Bulbs updated to 1.2.217 but Hue bridge doesn’t find them even when sitting right next to the bridge 🙁
I wonder if the author actually verified it before publishing this article (?).

Well I finally managed to pair them by using the Java Lampfinder app while removing power from other nearby lamps and putting the Trådfri almost onto of the bridge.
So, it can made to work – but it is definitely not a smooth process.

Same here, bulb updated to 1.2.217, the hue app doesn’t find the bulb, I un-paired it from the IKEA gateway

Bought bulbs and the gateway as recommended here, however you need a dimmer or remote as well for the IKEA app to complete setup and show you the update firmware option. Back to IKEA tomorrow then! Please update the article.

I use RaspBee Gateway from Dresden Elektronik. It works with Hue and Tradfri. Coupling the lamps and remotes (hue and Tradfri) works fine. No problem to control Hue Bulps with Tradfri remotes, even if you switch off the gateway. Hue Dimmers can control Tradfri Bulps only while the Gateway is active. So there are some differences. As there are no remotes for hue that allow to control the color or colourtemperature (exept using the expansive Hue Tap for Scenes or reprogram the Dimmer), using the Hue-Bridge without being able to use the Tradfri-Remotes is a no-go (I have 12 Tradfri… Read more »

Has anyone bought any that haven’t needed the manual firmware upgrade? I need to buy about 20 for my new place and would prefer to not have to buy a new bridge just for the upgrade.

1.Same question as Jan – 3 weeks later. Has anyone bought Tradfri LED’s recently that have the new firmware installed & don’t need one to buy the Tradfri gateway? Tried to get an answer from IKEA Chat and they hadn’t a clue. Thx for any help – really want to try this out.

2. Does anyone know when Tradfri color-changing LED’s are coming? Still none in London. Still none in Ikea.de so I wonder where Andre gets his prices from.

Thx Henry. If & when s.o. does buy firmware updated LEDs in London, pls post here.

having purchased some e14 and e23 lamps during the week from our local MK store, the e14’s were old firmware and the e23’s were new (1.2.217) The e14’s were setup on my tradfri hub and after the firmware was updated to 1.2.217, the buld was reset and then they were added to my hue bridge. The first time was a pain but after setting the hue app to fond new bulbs and ensuring that everything else was reachable it worked and then worked first time for each of the other bulbs i was doing as well. The e23’s went straight… Read more »

Hi all!! Has Anybody played with the GU10 bulbs yet? I have the GU10 Warm white and the GU10 white spectrum bulbs as well as E27 warm white. I have all linked to an ikea gateway and control. Following a software update I have the following versions Gateway 1.0.0008 GU10 WW 1.2.214 (up to date) GU10 W spectrum 1.1.1.0-5.7.2.0 (up to date) E27 WW 1.1.1.0-5.7.2.0 (update pending) Incidentally the GU10 WW are marked batch 1727 so according to various articles should have been shipped with v1.2.217! No idea why nothing wants to update to 1.2.217 which I believe is version… Read more »

Bit of an update……

All of the White spectrum GU10’s are now on v1.2.217 (was a local firewall issue, dont ask!)
However, all of the WW bulbs (e27 and GU10) are showing as up to date on v1.2.214 and are not visible in Hue.
I’m guessing there is currently no update for WW bulbs. Has anyone else experienced similar.

TIA, Ian

IanB

Hi, I’ve successfully updated 18 of the £12 White spectrum GU10 bulbs. These have all very quickly updated to v1.2.217 without issue shortly after I’ve paired them to the Tradfri hub. After the updates, the bulbs were reset and are then visible in Hue. If it seems to be taking a long time to update the bulbs, turn the lights off at the physical wall switch, power cycle the hub and then turn them back on and it will kick starts the update (I’ve monitored the traffic on my network and can see that this does kick start the update).… Read more »

Went to IKEA yesterday here in Helsinki, Finland. They had just got the colour bulbs in. Did not buy any to add to my existing Hue system due to a need to get the Tradfri Hub. Not many rooms/lamps left anyway…so will wait until a confirmed new firmware will be available in store: Just thought to mention, I spoke to a sales person and the batch sticker on the box (someone mentioned earlier “1727” is not an indication of the firmware, but a production or packaging week -> 2017 week27) This might give some indication when to expect new firmware… Read more »

Hi Just bought some new £7 Tradfri GU10 bulbs – but having probs finding them via my Hue hub.

S.o. has done this – see “Chris Burns” vids on

https://www.facebook.com/groups/alexafansuk/permalink/1408750552555470/

wh. shows how he did it using iconnecthue.

I have failed using Philips Hue and “all 4 hue” apps on android. I can/will try via iconnecthue borrowing an iphone/ipad.

But has anyone managed to connect them via an android app? There seem to be a range some of wh. are more sophisticated than the Philips Hue app.

Hi Mike……see my posts above. I’ve successfully updated all my white spectrum bulbs (£12 GU10 ones) but the cheaper warm white (£7 GU10) will not update to the required software level required for them to work with Hue. I believe this is going to be the same for everyone until Ikea release V1.2.217 firmware for the cheaper warm white bulbs.
If you’ve not read back, you will see that you will need bulbs updated to v1.2.217 to work with Hue. You will need an ikea hub and dimmer control to update the white spectrum bulbs

Just leaving this here: I unknowingly bought the Color E27 bulb at Ikea yesterday (in the Netherlands) expecting them to work with my Hue bridge without updating (as the Hue compatibility news was some months old already). Surprise: they actually did and came with 1.3.002 firmware out of the box. I did need lampfinder (and make them almost touch the bridge) to add them, but they work great since. I do not have an Ikea bridge.

Hi, just a little info I just got from the IKEA chat here in Stockholm.
According to them, there will be a new firmware release for the GU10 the cheaper warm white bulbs on
November 1.

No update for the GU10 WW as yet, still on 1.2.214. Hopefully it will follow very soon 🙂

Have you managed to update them yet? I bought some the other day and they still show 1.2.214 for me.

Ok – 1.2.214 can be paired using TouchLink. I used iConnectHue for this. It’s a pain to do as the bulb needs to be next to the bridge however all GU10s now linked.

I’m in Denmark, and picked up 6 of the GU10 WW on 9/11/17. Unfortunately like most of the others, they’re “up to date” with v1.2.214 and unable to find them with the native hue app.

Hi All, I bought 4no WW GU10s at Ikea Reading (England) today. £7 each. Working perfectly with Alexa, notes below. I don’t have an Ikea or Phillips hub but I have an Amazon Echo Plus (new version). I have one Hue bulb (warm white E27) that is controlled by the Echo Plus via app and voice for on, off and dimming. I have two wireless sockets that are controlled by Alexa via app and voice, using the eWelink app to initially set them up. I use them to control lamps. I also have a Harmony hub that is able to… Read more »
