After buying a Ring Video Doorbell we were very frustrated that it would not connect or even see the Wi-Fi connection in our house.

Here is a guide on how we fixed it.  We found this problem with Virgin Media and Super Hub 3, and of course in the UK, however it can apply to any provider or router as the issue is non-specific.

PS. You can buy the Ring Video Roobell over at Amazon for less than £160.

What went wrong?

The setup process is very similar to other Smart Home Tech – you connect to the devices own Wi-Fi

Then from within Rings app you select your own Wi-Fi network.

Ring Wifi

This is where the problem began – the app showed every single network except the Wi-Fi network we needed.

Ring won't connect wifi

After a few failed setup attempts the device seems to become non-responsive not allowing a phone to connect to its network.

After a frustrating hour we found out what the problem was and how to fix it.

How to fix it!

1. Check that the Wi-fi network you are trying to connect to is on 2.4Ghz – Ring only works with 2.4Ghz, unless you have the Ring Pro.

2. Press the orange button on the reverse of Ring for 30 seconds – this is a factory reset and broke the loop of ‘unable to join’ and allows you to start the process again form scratch.

3.  Check your Wi-Fi is on channel 1 – 11 as Ring does not support 12 or 13.  This is not mentioned anywhere in their literature however we found it hidden away on their website.

4. If your Wi-Fi is on channel 11 or 12 change it to a channel 1 – 11. You will need to connect to your hub/routers admin page to change the channel – don’t worry it’s very easy to do and will not ‘break’ anything.

Just make sure you check for congestion on that channel prior to choosing it or you could experience other issues. (see our guide on How to choose the best Wi-Fi channel here.)

5. Your Ring Video Door Bell should now see you Wi-Fi network and you can continue setup!

If you have any other Ring setup issues feel free to comment and we will see if we can help.

PS. You can buy the Ring Video Roobell over at Amazon for less than £160.

This fix worked for me. I’d put wifi network on channel 12 to avoid traffic in the street. As soon as I switched it to channel 8 the ring app connected first time. thanks

A few days ago I bought the video doorbell 2. When I set it up the first day it connected to my Bt home hub 3 WiFi straight away and it worked. I pressed the button, the bell rang and a message appeared saying there is someone at the door. Battery fully charged. The router is in the same room where I have been trying the ring video bell 2. When I tried it the next day for some unknown reason it won’t connect to the WiFi anymore. The white light keeps spinning non stop, and it says the WIFI… Read more »

Hi all,
I live in italy and I’m having a great issue with ring dorbell pro.
I’m very frustrated.
I’m unable to complete my initial setup because I can’t find the Ring newtork between my wifi networks.
I’ve a Samsung 7 edge phone (Android), in my house I’ve a lot of devices (IOT) connected and for the first time a wifi network is not present between my wifi networks.
It seems that my Ring doesn’t bradcast anything but the white light is spinning!
Please help me.
Thanks a lot

So my ring (original) doorbell has problems connecting to my network even when i disabled the 5G wireless and have only the 2.4Ghz running. I also have selected the option to where it connects to a certain channel (let’s say 6). I’ve gone to someone else’s house and set the ring up with their router and everything was fine and dandy. It worked. Only with my arris DG1660A modem router, am i having problems connecting. Any advice?

Hi I have a problem with my door bell. Everything was OK this morning, but now it doesn’t want to make the connection with the Wi-Fi. The batteries are fully charged, but when i press the back orange button for re-connection the light of the front ring is spinning for a few seconds indicating it and then it goes off. I’ve tried everything including changing the router channel and also reinstalled the app on my phone. would you advise me about this problem. Thanks in advance.

We got ring at Christmas and set it up that day. No problems. Right after we paid the $30 for annual fee, it went offline and we can’t reconnect. If we do the 30 second factory reset, does that have to be done by the account admin/owner? Or can any user
successfully do it?

Hi Everyone I just had what I hope is a quick question. Does the ring bell need access to broadband over a wifi router? I manage the systems for a small church and the router they have is fine but it’s heavily used to support a couple of admininstrators (as in office, not system) and some guest wifi via another access point in another church location. The ring device connects okay but the picture can be grainy and by the time the connection is made, the person at the door is usually gone so we just have a video of… Read more »

Thank you so very very much. I just installed my Ring Pro and at first it showed it did connect to my wifi, then it showed the slash through the icon and was disconnected. I kept going back through the setup to reconnect it and the light would blink white in the upper left corner and was solid everywhere else and the light would not spin. Ring wouldn’t set up. I was worried I didn’t have enough volts from my existing doorbell because the last reported health report was only showing about 3v. I was getting worried I wouldn’t be… Read more »

Henry – thanks a lot for the tip. My case was a bit more convoluted – a ring AND a Chime Pro bought in the US connected succcessfully (!) during setup to my European Airport Express without issue. Yet I kept getting “your phone is having trouble connecting, etc” while attempting to view the video feed. Started all over, same thing. The AE was in b/g compatinle mode, but the channel was set to Automatic. The manual range expectedly extended to 13, as I remember is standard for EU 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Well, the US b/g standard does not support channels… Read more »

Hi Henry,

I have the pro and I can’t setup because it won’t accept my WiFi password. The password is correct, checked it on several devices for several times.
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks!

FOR ANDROID USERS USING THE LOOKOUT APP — After repeated failure to connect to wifi I disconnected my Lookout app’s SAFE BROWSING. That did the trick. Apparently, in safe browsing mode, it was preventing Ring’s ability to connect to the internet.

Thanks for the tip. I was trying to change my wifi network for hours last night and always got the setup not complete. It would never connect to ring wifi using the app. I do have lookout safe browsing on and will turn it off and try soon as I get home. Thanks again

Ran into this issue two days ago. I have attempted to resolve the issue using two wireless routers (Nighthawk R7900 & R9000) with the SB8200 modem. With each Nighthawk taking turns being connected to the SB8200 modem, the RING cameras would not connect to the network. Keep in mind that the Nighthawk R7900 is fully operational and fully working at another location with other RING camera. Only brought the Nighthawk R7900 to isolate if the Nighthawk R9000 is the culprit which it turns out it is not. The culprit at this point seems to be the modem SB8200 which the… Read more »

Thank you for providing this information. I upgraded my modem router and thought I would connect the Ring to 5g. Couldn’t connect at 5 g….or to the previous setting of 2.4 g. Your advice to do a “factory reset” did the trick. Finally able to connect back at 2.4 G. Thanks!

My ring 2 and ring chime pro do not put out a wifi for my phone to connect with at all. I’ve tried resetting them, restarting setup, etc. Nothing. Ring customer service said it was our internet not being good enough (they could see us trying to connect to the ring). Said our 18 down, 2 up was not enough (its the max in our area) and yet I know several people in our area with less using ring just fine. I can’t even connect them to my phone to connect to our internet, so how is it our internet?… Read more »

I’m finding it impossible to connect my ring pro video doorbell as it won’t let me connect to the ring WiFi. I’ve tried pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and starting from the beginning again several times but always get stuck when asked to join the ring WiFi. Feel like throwing it away as I’ve wasted the best part of two days trying. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the advice. It was on channel 1, but I changed it to 6, which was less congested. Still not luck. Says it can’t find the network, even if I am right next to the router.

I am at a compelete loss here. I have even set up a Chime (1st gen) to help extend my wifi to my Ring Video Doorbell Pro. However every time I try to set up the doorbell, it will NOT connect to wifi. The “Ring” wifi will not show up in my list. Now I have tried to manually type it in and it still wont work. I have also checked and double checked that my personal wifi is on channel 6 and on 2.4. So please… can someone help me? Is it the fact that I have Telus wifi?… Read more »

My “new” doorbell arrived in an unsealed box.
After 2 1/2 hours waiting for the ‘phone and bell to pair I found the 30 second reset suggestion. I suspect this was a returned item because someone couldn’t get it to work.
Why not have the setup in the right order – allowing the bell access to the existing, working network?
The previous XSH took about 2 minutes to set up and was fine for two years until it inverted the video and then died completely. I thought I was upgrading.
