At an event at Sonos HQ in Boston, Sonos has confirmed that Alexa voice support is coming to Sonos is 2017!
This is coming as a free firmware update later this year in 2017. This means you will be able to use your Amazon Echo or Echo dot to voice control your Sonos. However they have not stated which devices it will work with, we are optimistic that this will be fully backwards compatible but time will tell.
Sonos and Alexa working together.
They also have not limited the tech they will work with adding they are building an “Agnostic voice platform that works with the best voice assistants out there”. This is great news, it also means they are not putting all their eggs in one basket and having to choose which platform to integrate.
Finally they also said how they are working on a speaker with an integrated Alexa, now this is very cool. It would mean you would not need a separate Amazon Echo and could also use your Sonos to control your lights or house. There was no indication no release date however we suspect they will target Christmas 2017.
PS. You can buy new Sonos products from Amazon UK, starting at around £100.
