Thanks for the comments David, really appreciated. We have update the review to add the extra details and fix the stupid typo – thank you!

It does have heat sensors to detect “sudden rises in temperature“.

The test we referred to requiring Bluetooth does indeed need Bluetooth, we have also updated above to make this clear. This can be found in the app, App > Check up > Continue. This is confirmed by the prompt if you try to do it without Bluetooth on:

Nest Protect Test

It does detect dangerous Carbon Monoxide and smoke using dual optical sensors. The Bluetooth communications are only used for initial setup or muting a false alarm from your phone or tablet. This ensures you are nearby and able to check the state of your room and not simply dismiss it from a distance. The sound check is entirely automatic and independent of Bluetooth.

The Nest Weave communications are 2.4GHz and based on 802.15.4 radios. As you mention this allows all Nest devices to work together. A good example is how the PIR motion sensor built-in to the Nest Protect (which can optionally trigger the built-in night light feature) assists the Nest Thermostat to detect if the house is occupied. Also if CO is detected then the boiler is shutdown automatically.
