IKEA is already making impressive moves with Smart Home tech with its Trådfri Smart Lighting Solution as well as its furniture integrated Qi charging.

Today IKEA announced an official partnership, we did not see coming, with SONOS to bring sound to the entire home.

IKEA’s head of Smart Home Björn Block commented:

“At IKEA we strive to make solutions for life at home by integrating technology into our home furnishing offer that are easy to use and affordable, thereby making smart home technology accessible to the many people. Together with Sonos we want to democratize music and sound in the home, and we want to create products designed for how people listen together at home. By teaming up with Sonos we want to combine IKEA home furnishing knowledge with Sonos’ expertise within great home sound.”

In true SONOS style this does not give us too much information.  What we can assume is they will sell SONOS products and potentially design furniture that works with SONOS.

SONOS always patent their products and nothing new has been registered so we assume no new actual SONOS products will be developed we assume the development will be with IKEA.

For example, shelves that SONOS can attach too, in a similar way to how they have integrated Qi chargers into lamps.

An interesting development would be an official integration between Trådfri and SONOS allowing light and sound to work together without any 3rd party tech required.

Whatever is released this is pretty exciting and scary for Philips Hue and Flexson, the biggest seller of SONOS accessories.

We have asked IKEA for a comment and will update you.

This is a we own it review of IKEA Trådfri.

If you don’t know what IKEA Trådfri is it is the new range of IKEA smart lighting. They were released in the UK only this year. At present they are only white bulbs but colour bulbs are to be ‘released soon’.

In this review we tested:

  • TRÅDFRI Dimming kit
  • TRÅDFRI E27
  • TRÅDFRI Hub

However the full range of smart bulbs includes:

  • E27
  • E14
  • GU10

They also have a good selection of controllers or as they call them ‘Steering devices’:

  • Remote control
  • Dimmer
  • Sensor

You can see their full range on their website.

The first noticeable thing about Trådfri is the mass market packaging. Normally with Smart Home tech the tech is packaged in a glossy box with a minimally designed manual, not Trådfri.

This is packaged in plastic with the standard IKEA style manual. However, this does fit with the product – this is affordable, dare we say cheap, smart lighting for the masses.

The bulbs themselves look like any LED lightbulb, the fitting is standard and we could easily put them into any matching fitting, we tested screw.

The bulbs are bright and compare to competitors being 1,000 lumens but also available in less bright options.

How easy is it to setup?

Setup is a little tricky and took a few attempts.

The first thing you do is remove the cover from the hub to reveal the Ethernet port. You then plug this into your router and power it on.

One nice design feature is you can wrap spare cables around the hub and cover the cables with the cover, leaving it with a clean tidy look.

IKEA Smart lighting setup

You then install the app, scan a QR code to connect the app to the hub.

Next you setup a controller and this is where the tricky part came.

First you add it to the app. You need to press the multipurpose button (on the bottom of it) on and off 4 times in 5 seconds, then open the app and add it.

We found you must be careful with the speed of pressing and the 5 seconds or it does not work.

Next you must add it to the hub. Again you must use the multipurpose button this time holding it in for 10 seconds when it is touching the hub.

Watch for the light changes on the hub as holding for too long and again it does not work.

Next to setup the bulbs power them on, hold an already setup controller so its touching the bulb or at most 2cm away. Press the multifunction button, again for 10 seconds and no more. The bulb should flash and be paired.

This also took a few attempts for us, for best results we turned off other ZigBee lights and timed the 10 seconds.

Its not a hard setup just a little more fiddly than you would expect. However once you have got it adding more bulbs didn’t take as long.

What’s the connectivity?

At present there is none other than the app, however later this year they are releasing an update to integrate Amazon Alexa and Apple Home Kit.

How much does IKEA Smart Lighting cost?

This is where the big difference comes in when compared to market leading smart lighting.

IKEA sell one bulb with a controller for £15.
The hub is only £25 or they sell a pack with two bulbs and controller and hub for £65.

This price makes it a perfect step into smart lighting or making your home smart!

What’s it like living with it?

Good and like other smart lights. Both controllers or ‘steering devices’ have a magnetic sheath and sticky pad. This is a nice touch as allows you to easily attach them to the wall and remove when you want to use them.

This is a nod to the known frustration with smart lighting where one switch of the actual light switch and the app and remotes are rendered useless. With the included sheath you can mount it on the wall and leave the main switch permanently on.

We especially liked the black disc dimmer, its very cool. You can put it on your sofa and turn like a volume dial. You don’t need to put it on a flat surface but when we didn’t we could not get a repeat result each time.

IKEA Smart lighting dimmer review

The app has some obviously competitor inspired features like Rise and Shine, Scenes and moods. This allows you to automate the lights coming on and easily enable your favourite settings you have saved as moods.

IKEA Smart lighting app

The app does however have an annoying bug where if you are multitasking and tap out the app, when it comes back it tells you it is unable to connect. To fix it you just need to close and reopen the app.

What are our final thoughts?

The big lacking feature is connectivity, at present they do not support Apple Home Kit, Alexa or IFTTT. This makes these smart lights well less smart – however as we said this should be fixed soon.

The thing to remember with these is this is mass market smart lighting. For the price point they work well, setup could be streamlined and the app does have a few glitches but it works.

We’re excited to see what the future brings for IKEA Smart Lighting as this is an impressive start and for the price it’s hard to argue!

Earlier this year we exclusively confirmed that IKEA Trådfri lights will one day with work with Philips Hue.
This is due to them both using the ZigBee protocol.

Like all smart home users we really wanted to see this happen.  The more tech that works together the better.

(Read Ikea Trådfri and Philips Hue)

We are very pleased to see IKEA were true to their word and a new firmware has just been released. UK users can access it now.

This firmware fixes the interoperability issue. This means once updated you can see and control the lights within the Philips Hue app!

This was confirmed with a small comment in the release notes:

“ZigBee interoperability with 3rd party devices improved”

To add your IKEA bulbs to your Hue family you need to make sure the bulbs are running the latest firmware. To update them you need the TRÅDFRI Gateway .

Eventually the bulbs will come off the shelf with the latest firmware, however this will probably take a while as existing stock will need to sell first.

One day in the future it would be amazing if retailers updated firmware of tech they sold to prevent this issue. However we can not see it happening any time soon. On the positive side IKEA sell in vast volumes so hopefully it will not take long for the new stock to arrive.

IKEA exclusively commented to us:

“We’re thrilled in the interest in TRÅDFRI, our new smart lighting and we’re excited to share that the range is now compatible with Philips Hue and will be compatible with Apple, Amazon and Google in the autumn.

Small changes in lighting can have a great impact on people’s well-being. Many people want to change their light and the atmosphere depending on the activity and we see that life at home can be improved by integrating technology into our home furnishings. With our Home Smart range, we want to make this easy, affordable, and therefore accessible to many people.

In the years to come, there will be additional launches, enabling people to build onto their Home Smart solution.”

We brought you the news IKEA has moved into home automation lighting with its Trådfri system.
(Read article here http://www.smarthomegeeks.co.uk/news/ikea-moves-into-automation-tech/ )

As we mentioned in the article IKEA’s Trådfri uses ZigBee to communicate. To be precise they work with ZigBee’s standard called ‘ZigBee Light Link’ or ZLL for short.

( If you fancy a geeky read here is the specification for it:
http://www.zigbee.org/zigbee-for-developers/applicationstandards/zigbee-light-link/ )

The very interesting part is this is the same standard that Philip’s Hue uses.

You can purchase Philips Hue products from Amazon UK.

This has excited lots of Philip’s Hue fans as this should allow interoperability, ZigBees term for working together, between Hue and Trådfri. This would opens up an entire new ecosystem to existing Philips Hue owners.  For example adding IKEA’s furniture compatible Trådfri lights to an existing Hue setup. Not to mention the possibility of adding cheaper lights to an existing Hue setup.

Philips confirmed they will allow it via a statement on their developers forum:

“There is no intention to block any third-party bulbs using ZigBee Light Link from working with the Philips Hue system”

However unfortunately at present the bulbs do not work with Hue.

A further comment from Philips said:

“As the IKEA bulbs do not behave fully compliant with the ZLL standard, they are rejected by the Hue bridge. IKEA is aware of this and informed us their intent is to have the IKEA smart lighting bulbs to work with the Philips Hue bridge. We offer our support to realize this in the future.”

This goes against a basic principle of ZigBee as defined on their website:

“Products with the ZigBee logo work together seamlessly, even if they’re from different companies”

We have asked both Philips, Ikea and ZigBee for a comment and any idea of timescales and we will update you when we here back.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon as the system has just gone on sale in the UK. The more Smart Tech that works together the better!

**UPDATE 27/4/2017**

We have had an exclusive comment from IKEA and Philip’s after contacting their press office for a comment:

Philip’s Lighting commented:

“Philips Hue follows the ZigBee Light Link standard. Several third party brands have implemented this standard in the way that the Hue system expects and can therefore be connected to the Hue bridge. The Hue app will recognize and display these third party products as generic ZigBee Light Link products. IKEA is free to make the same implementation choices. We cannot confirm if in that case the IKEA products would work with the Hue bridge without having done the required testing from our side.”

IKEA then said:

“We are working on a software update to be compliant with Philips Hue Bridge and will release it as soon as it is ready. We will continue the journey towards the smart home and making our products compatible with others on the market with the ambition to make it simple for the many people to create a better everyday life at home.”

These comments confirm that at some point IKEA Trådfri lights will work with Philips Hue – allowing you do add their bulbs or lights and hopefully control them within the Hue app.

Brilliant news for all Hue owners – follow us on Facebook & Twitter for the latest updates.

PS. You can purchase Philips Hue products from Amazon UK.

Swedish flat pack and furniture specialist Ikea has announced the launch of Trådfri.

Trådfri meaning wireless in Swedish is a smart lighting solution based on the ZigBee Protocol – the same as market leader Philips Hue.

LED Lights or bulbs connect to a hub that’s connected to the internet via an Ethernet connection.

Bulbs are controlled by an innovative looking motion controlled disc that also doubles up as a switch allowing you to dim the lights between 3 set temperatures – 2200K, 2700K, and 4000K.

Note there is no colour changing functionality, making it aligned with Philips Hue Lux range.

The big difference to this solution is cost, this is very cheap!  Bulbs start from an amazingly low $16.99 with an impressive 25,000 hours life span. While the hub is only $28.49.

One interesting feature is they announced these will be compatible with other products, for example fitting into the hugely popular storage range.

Trådfri has currently only been launched in Sweden – hopefully it with roll out to the U.K. In the near future.

As soon as we can get our hands on one we will give it a full review.

However from what we know so far this is an exciting development as there is currently nothing at this affordable price point in the market.

Here is their super cringe advert for them:
